Kubrick Paper
STANLEY KUBRICK
Stanley Kubrick is one of the most influential filmmakers of his time; his films were embedded with controversy and critical acclaim. Fellow colleagues of his describe him as a very strange man, with a methodical technique, and a severe perfectionist mentality. I would assume someone with the level of artistic vision he acquires you would probably be a little odd. In fact I consider most artists if not all to be a little insane in their own way. He has directed some fantastic films touching base in almost every genre in cinema. You think of “Spartacus” to “ 2001: A Space Odyssey” to “The Shining” and it doesn’t get much more random then that. His meticulous dedication to all elements of his films plus his inventive camera work allowed him to stand out among other directors of his time.
Kubrick is known for his ability to create a film that is hard to understand the first time around. A single hand movement or eye roll could have significant meaning. He chooses every element of the film with exquisite detail: from the background scenery down to a belt buckle or shoelace. Everything you see in his films are meant to be there and have a purpose. He was one of the only directors who controlled every aspect of his films. Most directors will hire outside help when it comes to the score or editing, but Kubrick would be there every step of the way. He used a technical tool known as mise-en-scene, which balances all elements of film harmoniously. All the fundamentals were included, lighting, sets, acting, dialogue, music, and in particular editing. While describing his editing process he explained,
“Everything else in film comes from something else. Writing, of course, is writing, acting comes from the theatre, and cinematography comes from photography. Editing is unique to film. You can see something from different points of view almost simultaneously, and it creates a new experience. One can create a performance in the editing room and often re-direct a film.”
You could tell by this demeanor that he took extensive pride in his work and was truly able to call it his own. In other words, his films weren’t ones you left the theater to go to the bathroom.
My favorite Kubrick film is “The Shining” not only because it’s highly entertaining and that I’m an absolute lover of horror films but also because the artistic subtleties imbedded throughout the film bring the underlining subtext to life. The first time I saw it or rather the first fifteen times I saw it I never really understood what was going on. Ghosts are randomly everywhere, the time travel element, and the actual “shining” the young boy Danny possesses. While taking a film class here at Hofstra we watched “The Shining” and discussed every detail about it and it was then I realized that I never really knew what the film was about. The most important aspect is time, the way he uses titles throughout the film, “The Interview”, “Tuesday”, “Thursday”, “8 am”, “4 pm”. You can notice that the titles seem to be building up to a specific moment, starting with just an event turning into days then hours. Even though these titles only flash on the screen for a couple of seconds at a time, Kubrick allows the subconscious to notice these subtle details. These tricks he uses cause you to build tension during a specific scene or permit you to leave the theater wondering why you feel so emotionally distraught. His artistic vision could transform a scene into something beyond what the dialogue was, or sometimes no dialogue at all. The maze motif runs strong throughout “The Shining”, not only figuratively and literally but also visually. During scenes where Danny is playing throughout the hotel the carpet is designed and chosen to look maze-like, watch the video below. He has a great ability to let the subtext seep through his visual choices. These few examples are just the tip of the iceberg; the list of topics to discuss is never-ending.
A lot of controversies surrounding Kubrick’s films are “the unknowns”; discussing just one of his films could take months, possibly years. You never really know what his intentions are regarding specific details of his films. For example, many speculate the use of the number 114 in his films. In “Dr. Strangelove” there is a critical radio device called CRM 114 and in “A Clockwork Orange” there is a medicine called serum 114. Some claim that this is just coincidental but others are adamant that it has specific meaning Kubrick never discusses it publicly. He wasn’t much of a public figure never buying into the machine that is Hollywood. He passed away in ’99 and is remember as one of the most influential directors of all time. Many contemporary directors, including Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, have listed Kubrick as a source of inspiration.

FINISHED
So I completed the videos and I'm going to put them on youtube another night because I'm exhausted, have studying to do, and can't deal with setting up a youtube account at this time.. Hopefully everyone likes them and finds them creative and simple. I was really trying to keep my design playful yet modern.. Let me know what you think when they go up.

Animation Round 2
Ok so I'm on the verge of completing my Simple video and have started putting the basics into the complex.. As of right now I'm feeling pretty good of my status regarding classwork, as long as nothing catastrophic happens, like losing my jump drive, which reminds me i should save some stuff to my home computer. Anyways I probably won't post the Simple video until I have both done, so you don't have to scroll through tons of entries to find it..

Lite Bright
Ok so I not going to rip on how absolutely unattractive this backpack is.. so instead I'm going appreciate it for what it is, which is a reflector that reflects only during the nighttime.. now I ca see a lot of people being interested in this product because it a very safe way to enjoy nighttime activities.. but man oh man you could attract anyone with that thing, and maybe it won't be for good.

Touch EVERYTHING
Design author Dan Saffer's article about touchscreen interfaces and what the future holds for the computer and technology itself. What he basically says is after learning a few controls and motions your fingers will become your ultimate tool. With devices like the iPhone, the Voyager, and all the other touch screen phones the future is close. The computer mouse and keyboard will one day obsolete.. sad

Simpler is Easier
The design of this fridge looks amazing yet its not the leading feature.. apparently a designer has solved the "water dispensing tube" replacement epidemic thats causing grief to water drinkers around the world. The company Electrolux has teamed up with Brita who has installed a container on the back of the door with a hole to the front. seems to simple to be true..
Two for One 2
Hey just found a quote regarding the one screen split image device that was posted before this, just for a little bit more info..
"The eight-inch Splitview Command display uses a clever masking system to direct light from alternate pixels in different directions, resulting in a two-at-once viewer where the other screen is completely invisible to one viewer."

Two for One
This is pretty spectacular.. Mercedes Benz is on the verge of yet another innovative luxury appliance that they're know for. This device, as you can see in the picture, allows the driver to view one image while the passenger can view something completely different. Not really sure if this is a necessity but with technology like this people will flood to it. One of those things you say wow when you first see it..

Animation Round 1
And so it begins..
I haven't used after effects in quite some time and while I was I'm taking my refresher course on the specifics of the program, the computer froze and I lost everything. Thankfully I really didn't have much but still it always sucks to lose work no matter how much it is. Either way.. at least now I know what I'm doing, AE came right back to me after an hour or so messing around. Plus I'm confident that I'll be able to execute my storyboards the way intended so I'll take the good with the bad.

Air Travel
This is a pretty cool video that monitors air travel around the world in 24 hours.. I know it doesn't sound like anything exciting but the animation is really well done and it looks really stunning..

Free Hand
Storyboard
Just completed the storyboards and I have specific ideas about what I plan to do..
The simple video will consist of the two "objects" of my logo fading in and sliding in from both sides to "collide" in the center.
and my text will fall from the top.. I do have little details that will make it more visually pleasing.
The complex video will have the wave part of my logo split up individually and spinning into the center where they will connect with the other logo piece. My text will come from the top again but I'm going to try and have a wave effect on the, you guessed it, the waves.
hopefully I won't run into any complications, keep your finger crossed.

Steaming Aesthetic
I really like this aesthetic / movement called "Dieselpunk" It combines steampunk, lumbering and diesel - burning machines. It has a graphic novel look about it and it also looks like a machine blueprint.
I particularly enjoy the picture in the top right, it has a cool futuristic element about it thats kickass.

PostSecret
Great website! People from around the world send in postcards anonymously and on them they right their darkest secrets. Not only is it a way to be artistic with the design it’s a way to vent about certain things you can't bear to tell anyone else. A lot of people can also relate to some of the postcards that are sent in and they hit all kinds of topics. Some are very funny, some are disgusting, some are sad, and some are uplifting. It’s a cool way to communicate to the world without ever knowing what kind of person your speaking to.

Love the Blind
I posted not to long ago about a blind cell phone that I thought was pretty cool, now a designer named David Chavez has won a Spark award for Braille watch which displays a real-time readout in braille using military time. Awesome idea and also another cool looking design, its too bad the blind won't actually see what it looks like but thats beside the point.

Cream Cheese
I really liked this article because I feel, myself included, that trying to get portable cream cheese on a bagel at 7 a.m. while sitting in traffic is a task. So I'm surprised that someone hasn't thought of this sooner but how cool is this, a squeeze and spread design by Miles Russell. Not only is it more effective but it also produces less plastic waste. Pretty cool.

Blind Cell Phone
I thought this was a really cool concept and shows where technology is moving. Its cool because the cell phone will tell the user what buttons they are touching and once pressed it confirms it. it also has a bluetooth feature so if your in public you can have some privacy without disturbing others. I think that this is an awesome idea and the design is very sharp too.

Voting Booth Design
This Challenge was cool because it gave designers a chance to bring their designs political. The main criteria was to design something for a voting booth and anyone who entered only had an hour. I like these little challenges because they help generate quick thoughts ad ideas while still being creative.

Packaging Plus
I really enjoyed this article because packaging design is one of the most crucial elements in selling any product. It's the best way for your product to separate itself from the competition in many different ways. it's helps your brand find an artistic identity so when consumers see your products they know its from you. This article has some great ideas , ten to be exact, and they're really insightful.

The Final 3
The countries that I've chosen are:
Kenya
Cyprus
Iceland
In my researching I'm looking for similarities that my three countries share. At this point it's pretty much anything from food to landscapes
I'm in the process of finding repeating imagery and thinking of logo designs
